Moving from the Jazz-rich SF Bay Area to San Diego
I felt rather stranded when I moved to San Diego last February, 2025, from the San Francisco Bay Area where I’ve enjoyed world class Jazz performances at multiple venues for the past 47 years. I was also able to hear great Jazz on KCSM FM just by turning on the radio.
Now where do I go to hear Jazz?
A weekly newsletter from an internationally famous San Diego Jazz guitarist, Peter Sprague, introduced me to some of the local Jazz venues, including Tio Leo’s, Ki’s, the Conrad Prebys Performing Arts Center, and others.
I also found Dizzy's Den, Jazz Lounge, the Magnolia and other music venues on Google.
Discovering Vibrant Jazz Scene in San Diego
After discovering a San Diego Jazz station, KSDS, San Diego's Jazz 88.3 FM, I started to tap into more live jazz concerts and events. Discovering the following local jazz venues, I now regularly go to great live jazz performances once or twice a week:

Sunday Night Jazz @ Tio Leo’s
Holly Hofmann hosts Sunday Night jazz series at Tio Leo's Restaurant and Lounge at 5302 Napa St. at Morena Blvd. Jazz at Tio Leo's happens every Sunday evening from 5-7pm and features Southern California's finest jazz musicians in a quiet, spacious setting with full bar and Mexican cuisine. There is also plenty of free parking.
In addition to Sunday night Jazz, Tio Leo’s offer a variety of live music and dancing throughout the week.

Jazz Collective Tuesday Jam Session
On the second and fourth Tuesday, San Diego Jazz Collective (house band) hosts Jazz Jam sessions at Duck Foot Brewing Co Miramar from 7 pm to 9:30 pm.
The atmosphere is casual and the drinks are reasonable. The pub does not have a kitchen but a local food truck usually stations right outside the lounge entrance serving up decent dinners and snacks.

Panama 66 Wednesday Jam
Every Wednesday, Gilbert Castellanos presents the Young Lions Series and Jazz Jam series in the James S. Copley Auditorium or at Panama 66 in the Museum’s May S. Marcy Sculpture Court.
The Wednesday Night Jam Session is a free, all ages show. Food & drink is allowed in the auditorium.

Dizzy’s Den
It is a spare, inexpensive and comfortable Jazz performance space that looks like a small hall with a stage. Instead of talking, patrons listen. This place serves only the music. So patrons bring their own drinks and snacks.
Lou Lou’s Jungle Room at the Lafayette Hotel
Lou Lou's Jungle Room is a restored 1946 supper club and live music venue located downstairs at the Lafayette Hotel in North Park. On select Thursdays, Chef Tania Leon presents a multi-course prix fixe dinner alongside live performances on the original clamshell stage -- the same stage that once hosted Bob Hope. The room features its original circular bar, hardwood dance floor, red fringed ceiling, plush banquettes, and a state-of-the-art sound system by Devon Turnbull. Gilbert Castellanos holds a monthly residency, with a steady rotation of jazz and soul filling out the calendar. Doors open at 6pm. The bar is always open seating. 21+.
