{"id":5430,"date":"2026-10-03T16:09:23","date_gmt":"2026-10-03T23:09:23","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.mikikosmado.com\/?p=5430"},"modified":"2026-10-03T16:19:26","modified_gmt":"2026-10-03T23:19:26","slug":"digital-be-in-tokyo-blast-from-the-past","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.mikikosmado.com\/ja\/2026\/10\/03\/digital-be-in-tokyo-blast-from-the-past\/","title":{"rendered":"Digital Be-In Tokyo \u2013 Blast from the Past!!"},"content":{"rendered":"<h1 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Bringing the Digital Be-In Events to Japan<\/h1>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Looking back at my life, one of the most memorable experiences is being a part of localizing and producing Digital Be-In Tokyo, Japan's first large scale digital event.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Having attended a few <a href=\"https:\/\/grayarea.org\/community-entry\/digital-be-in\/\">Digital Be-In events<\/a> in San Francisco in the early 1990s, I was impressed by the creative applications of technologies, and envisioned bringing this event to Japan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In 1994, I initiated the plan by contacting the event producer, <a href=\"https:\/\/celebratingmichael.net\/\"><strong>\u30de\u30a4\u30b1\u30eb\u30fb\u30b4\u30ba\u30cb\u30fc<\/strong><\/a> at Verbum, and <strong>IDG\u30b8\u30e3\u30d1\u30f3<\/strong> (now a part of <a href=\"https:\/\/ja.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/%E6%97%A5%E7%B5%8CBP\"><strong>Nikkei BP<\/strong><\/a>), the producer of MacWorld Expo Japan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Meeting Michael Gosney and Presenting My Idea<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When I first contacted Michael Gosney, he was still living in both San Diego and San Francisco. He suggested meeting in San Diego for our first meeting. So I flew to San Diego on a rainy day and presented my idea of localizing Digital Be-in to be held in Japan by collaborating with IDG Japan, the event producer of Macworld Expo Japan. He was quite interested in the idea and wanted to discuss the plan with IDG Japan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Presenting the Plan to IDG Japan<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Next, I contacted IDG Japan through a friend who worked close to the head of the company. The event team at IDG Japan liked my plan and invited Michael and me to their office in Tokyo to discuss the plan further.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So Gosney and I flew to Tokyo and met with the event production team at IDG\u2019s Tokyo office. After ironing out some details, we agreed to co-produce, and hold the event at Makuhari Messe on the night of MacWorld Expo Tokyo in 1995.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Meeting Timothy Leary&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A month prior to MacWorld Expo 95, Michael suggested that I meet Timothy Leary in San Francisco to chat about Tokyo Be-In. At the time, he was scheduled to attend the Tokyo Be-In as the keynote speaker.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As I have always admired Mr. Leary, a legendary cultural icon, I was very excited about meeting him. Michael arranged for us to meet at a small post-event party held at a pub near Moscone Center after the MacWorld.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">First thing Mr. Leary said to me when we met, while beaming his smile at me, was, \u2018I like your tie!\u2019 He was referring to a wide colorful flower print tie I was wearing. Instantly, I was in his universe.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He told me he truly looks forward to attending the Tokyo Be-In as he loves Japan. As he was surrounded by friends and followers, we didn\u2019t get to chat much, but it was enough for me just to meet, shake hands, and be in the same space with him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The next day, I was walking across the event floor of the Be-In venue and saw Mr. Leary sitting cross-legged on the floor with his friends. When I walked nearby, Mr. Leary raised his hand and said, 'hi Miki, see you in Japan soon.' I felt so honored that he remembered me and my name.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Later that month, however, he was diagnosed with aggressive prostate cancer, and had to cancel traveling to Japan. Instead, he video taped his keynote speech for Tokyo Be-In which Michael Gosney presented at the opening of the event.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Digital Be-In Tokyo \u2014 Japan\u2019s First Large-Scale Digital Culture Event<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As planned, the event was held at Makuhari Messe Conference center in Chiba, a suburb of Tokyo, where MacWorld Expo Japan was also held, and attracted about 2000 attendees.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The event, sponsored by Apple Computer Japan and others, began with a presentation by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.be-in.com\/10\/bios\/gosney.html\">\u30de\u30a4\u30b1\u30eb\u30fb\u30b4\u30ba\u30cb\u30fc<\/a> of Verbum on the history of the Be-In and the connections between the 1960s Bay Area-based counterculture and the personal computer revolution. Gosney presented a videotaped keynote message from <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Timothy_Leary\">Timothy Leary<\/a>, in which he complimented the Japanese people on their spiritual depth and modern leadership, and suggested that Japan is going to \u201cTurn On, Intertune In, and Shine Out!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Live performances included the AKA Dig, Cheap Purple, and the Residents.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Digital Art Gallery was organized by Tadao Shibata, editor of SuperDesigning magazine. The Digital Frontier featured exhibits by avant garde multimedia publisher Digitalogue, HSC Software, Oracion and many others.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One of the most popular features of the event was an auction for the victims of <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/1995_Hanshin_earthquake\"><strong>Kobe earthquake.<\/strong><\/a> <strong><\/strong><strong>occurred on January 17. V<\/strong>endors donated millions of yen worth of software.
