While searching for YouTube videos for the song, I found a video clip of Billie Holiday singing it and another wonderful Blues tune called <em>The Blues Are Brewin\u2019 <\/em>with Louis Armstrong and his band backing her.\u00a0<br>Both of these clips are from a black and white movie titled <strong><em><a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/3URpKBS\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" title=\"\">New Orleans<\/a><\/em><\/strong> (1947 film) which was available on Amazon Prime.\u00a0 So I watch it.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong><em>'New Orleans'; <\/em>what's it about?<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Rich music and a classic romance storyline set in the 1920s immediately captivated me.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Although this movie is mostly known for the jazz performances by Louis Armstrong and Billie Holliday, it offers some classy entertainment value as well.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>What is this movie about? Also performing in the film is a Jazz&nbsp;clarinetist, saxophonist, singer, and&nbsp;big band&nbsp;leader&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Woody_Herman\">Woody Herman<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Basic Plot<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Storyville,_New_Orleans\">Storyville<\/a>&nbsp;casino owner Nick Duquesne and a high society opera singer Miralee Smith fall in love during the birth of the blues in New Orleans.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Main Cast<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Arturo_de_C%C3%B3rdova\">Arturo de C\u00f3rdova<\/a>&nbsp;as Nick Duquesne<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Dorothy_Patrick\">Dorothy Patrick<\/a>&nbsp;as Miralee Smith<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Marjorie_Lord\">Marjorie Lord<\/a>&nbsp;as Grace Voiselle<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Irene_Rich\">Irene Rich<\/a>&nbsp;as Mrs. Rutledge Smith<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Richard_Hageman\">Richard Hageman<\/a>&nbsp;as Henry Ferber<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Louis_Armstrong\">Louis Armstrong<\/a> as Satchmo himself<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Billie_Holiday\">Billie Holiday<\/a>&nbsp;as Endie<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Woody_Herman\">Woody Herman<\/a>&nbsp;as himself<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Although none of the cast members are famous, they are quite good;\u00a0Arturo De Cordova as Nick, whose deep voice lends authenticity as a King of Basin Street, Dorothy Patrick as Miracle, a classic beauty with a genuine sparkle in her eyes, veteran actress Irene Rich as Miralee\u2019s mother, along with composer\/pianist Richard Hageman who won the Academy Award in 1939 for scoring Stagecoach, as the symphony conductor. The actors all fit their roles well and compensate for the oversimplified script with their talent.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Romancing Jazz<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>As the love story between two characters, Miralee Smith\u2014a beautiful opera singer, and Nick Duquesnes\u2014an owner of a gambling house in Storyville unfolds, <em>New Orleans<\/em> loosely traces the rise of jazz in the early 20s.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While Miralee and Nick come from different backgrounds, their love of Jazz music pulls them together initially and reunites them at the end.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Along with Louis Armstrong in his prime, Billie Holliday, Woody Herman, Kid Orry, and many other talented musicians perform authentic Jazz numbers.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Jazz lovers will enjoy the magic of the music throughout the film, like a scrapbook of happy memories.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Billie Holiday\u2019s commanding performance<\/strong><\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p>Even though this is her only film, 32-year-old Billie Holiday seems at ease in her role, and sings some of her best songs, including:\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong><em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=m4jU8IQK5b0&amp;list=RDm4jU8IQK5b0&amp;start_radio=1&amp;ab_channel=bessjazz\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" title=\"\">Do You Know What It Means To Miss New Orleans<\/a>\u00a0<\/em><\/strong>(YouTube)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong><em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=m4jU8IQK5b0&amp;list=RDm4jU8IQK5b0&amp;start_radio=1&amp;ab_channel=bessjazz\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" title=\"\">T<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=OajOOf4vwWs&amp;ab_channel=AymericYT\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" title=\"\">he Blues Are Brewin<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=m4jU8IQK5b0&amp;list=RDm4jU8IQK5b0&amp;start_radio=1&amp;ab_channel=bessjazz\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" title=\"\">\u2019<\/a><\/em><\/strong> (YouTube)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>For me, the scenes where she sings these sultry Jazz blues tunes make this film worth watching.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Woody Herman\u2019s magnificent solo on <em>The Blues Are Brewin\u2019<\/em> is timeless and way ahead of its time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As one reviewer commented, \u2018<strong><em>There is no other movie like this one!<\/em><\/strong>\u2019<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>For quite some time, I&#8217;ve wanted to learn to play and sing a classic blues tune Do You Know What It Means To Miss New Orleans.
